What Is Important in Life?

You may have seen or heard the quote, “The most important things in life aren’t things.” It is easy to forget what really matters in life when our lives seem to revolve around material things. Our cars, our homes, our big screen TVs, the latest smartphones; are these really the most essential things in life? The truth is that our most precious commodities cannot be ordered online, purchased at a store, or even found at the bank. So, what is important in life? We have narrowed the list down to just 4 things: time, relationships, health, and purpose.

What Matters Most in Life

On a spiritual level, material things do not matter. Even if we accumulate them, we can still feel unfulfilled and that something is missing. On the other hand, if you start to enjoy life experiences and important life moments, make long-term plans, and stop the toxic and empty competition with others, you will be able to see life in a different and satisfying way.

What Are the Most Important Things in Life?

Time

How come some people go through life stressed, complaining about not having enough time while others always seem relaxed and get things done? After all, we all have the same number of hours in a day. An important thing to consider about time is that every time we say “yes” to something, we say “no” at something else, and that is a balance we need to pay attention to.

There is no point in rushing from one commitment to another if we are not going to be truly present at any of them. At the end of the day, we will have less and less time to see the people we really want to see and to do what we really want to do. Although we are not able to get time back, we can be selective about what we do with the time we have.

It is possible that our jobs or activities do not allow us to take control of our time as we might like, especially if others depend on us. If this is true in your case, you can find a couple of minutes to invest in yourself. Keep in mind that the more you can look after your own well-being, the better equipped you will be to help others. Although it is a big challenge, it is important to make the best of our situations and be grateful for what we have.

Relationships

Instead of wondering “what is important in life?” it is time to think about “who is important in our lives” Our busy lives have made us believe we do not have enough time in our days for our relationships. However, being “so busy” is not really out of our hands. We need to make it a priority to make time to foster our relationships. Our family, Christian friends, and loved ones are what add spark to our lives. Being busy with the people and things that mean the most to us is the best way to spend our days. There have even been studies about the benefits of dating and how it can positively affect our health and well-being. Think of how your family influences you in so many positive ways. How about enjoying more of those beautiful moments with your loved ones?

Health

Although lots of us take it for granted, health makes the short list for what matters most in life. We complain about being always stressed, carrying extra weight, and feeling tired after walking upstairs; however, we keep neglecting our mental health, diet, and exercise.

You can walk, go to the gym, practice yoga, do bodyweight exercises, or anything else that adds movement to your life. Remember that our bodies were not made to sit in front of the TV or computer all day long.

Don’t forget to eat healthily. Add vegetables and fruits to your meals and you will see how healthy eating can also be delicious and enjoyable. Regular check-ups with your doctor will detect any health problems in early stages, but we should always do our best to be kind to our bodies and be our best selves.

Purpose

Last but not least, the fourth most important thing in life: purpose. What is important in life if we do not have something that drives our actions? Purpose is our “why”. Purpose is what allows us to live our lives intentionally; with passion and love for our relationships. If things get difficult, our purpose gives us strength and meaning while living the Christian life.

Nevertheless, it is possible to lose our way and forget our purpose in life. If this ever happened to us, we can try answering a few questions that can be quite revealing in challenging moments:

– What is my reason to get up in the mornings?

– Where am I trying to get to?

– What do I want less of in my life?

– What do I want more of in my life?

Hopefully, these answers lead us back to our purpose and guide us to what is important in life. Reflect on these questions and their answers whenever you feel confused about your purpose or mission in life.
